Calling all geeks: Mattel WWE Legends Wave 3
For all you action-figure marks out there–and you know who you are–Mattel has released prototypes of the upcoming WWE Legends line, wave 3: Mr. Perfect, psychotic “Loose Cannon” Brian Pillman (’97 Hart Foundation era), Davey Boy Smith (Hart Foundation), Big Van Vader (circa the lame White Castle of Fear match concept; say what you want, but the big guy certainly had a way with the ladies…must have been all that exotic fruit), the Rock and Hacksaw Duggan (his seemingly never-ending WWF/E run.)
Vader and Perfect appear to be the best of the set (the latter comes with his trademark white towel and detailed, painted IC title; chewing gum sold seperately). That crazed, coked-up Pillman scan is pretty cool, but I have to question the logic of including three guys in the same set who died of drug overdoses before their 45th birthday. (Reminds me of when a toy rep in the mid-90s was discussing a legends line of action figures with Tommy Rich, who I was managing at the time. Rich suggested the name of the line be “Wrestling Legends: Dead or Alive.” I don’t believe Tommy ever heard back from them. Sounded pretty catchy to me.

Pillman’s face looks like a poorly made claymation figure!
Does Vader come with a midget and exploding boat?
I finally got to find a few of the Series One and Two Figures for (ahem ahem) my Son’s collection—Got the Dusty Rhodes and Road Warrior Animal from Series One, and the Rick Rude and Jake The Snake from Series 2—-the Terry Funk was there, but budget restraints kept me from buying more than two on each visit to Target.
I’d buy em all if I could find them, the Mattel stuff is rather popular around these parts, with a LOT of empty shelf space where they would normally be.
Then again, series One of TNA sold out here, so I guess there’s no accounting for taste…
I’ve been really digging the Mattel line so far. I picked up a Steamboat and an Austin from the first series, but have yet to spot series two in my area. I’ll definitely be picking up the Perfect figure when it makes its way on to the shelves as well as the Vader. I like that they’re doing Bulldog and Pillman from the Hart Foundation era. I would love to get a set of all the Hart Foundation with their leather jackets, but since we’ll never see an Owen figure that will never happen.
I got a whole batch this week, as I found out that my Target re-stocks the shelves in the AM at 8 o’clock on a daily basis, so Monday I hit Stone Cold and Hawk to finish off the Road Warriors set. Thursday I got Ricky the Dragon, and found Superfly Snuka for the first time today. So I have 8 of the first two series thusfar, and Kamala, Sgt. Slaughter, Terry Funk are all there should I have the extra beanage to spare to pick them up…
