Dig it! Mattel’s Randy Savage action figure in all its glory

Could it be that Vince McMahon is mellowing? Not only did Mick Foley’s new book, Countdown to Lockdown, receive a plug on Monday night’s RAW, but Randy “Macho Man” Savage has a soon-to-released Mattel action figure to go with the WWE-produced DVD of some of his greatest matches from last year. Whatever heat existed between the two stemming from Savage’s defecting to WCW (and the Macho Man’s rumored tryst with Stephanie McMahon) seems to be have been extinguished. Longtime collectors of the Jakks line have been clamoring for years for a Savage figure, but Vince would never budge, refusing to sign off on the deal. (On that note, I wouldn’t count on Martha Hart approving of an Owen figure in her lifetime.) WWE’s commitment to Mattel is evident, as the toy company has now come through with the fans’ most-requested licensing deals: Ricky Steamboat, Kevin and Kerry Von Erich (both brothers come with Claw-grip…pictured below) and now Savage.

At this rate, Savage is a shoe-in for induction into the WWE Hall of Fame within the next two years and most likely, a documentary-style DVD release. (The 2011 ceremony in Georgia would actually be appropriate as I believe that’s where young Randy Poffo worked for the first time under the “Savage” surname; there’s also the irony of his jumping to Ted Turner’s Atlanta-based  promotion as part of the reason for the heat between he and McMahon.)

WWE’s Defining Moments line will be a high-end offering for collectors, similar to its fantastic Entrance Greats figures, with a price of around $21.99. The figure is based on the Macho Man’s WrestleMania VII attire when he carried the Ultimate Warrior to a damn good bout in the “retirement match,” which saw him turn babyface and reunite with the late Miss Elizabeth in the aftermath.

Oh, yeeahhhhhh!

Well, Dom, they don’t call him the Macho Man for nothing. Savage ALLEGEDLY had a fling with Steph. It’s been a rumor that’s never been confirmed, but some folks suspect it’s true because Vince’s heat with Savage was incredibly intense…way beyond just disappointment that Macho jumped ship to Turner. Supposedly, whenever Savage’s name would be brought up prior to 2008, Vince would become furious and change the subject and refuse to sign off on any Legends-related merchandise involving the Macho Man…hence no action figures or DVDs for years. Clearly, time heals all wounds…and Vince realizes that there’s money to be made with Randy…hence the DVD last year and the new Mattel fig.

I’m picking up that savage figure asap once it’s out. Definitely juiced about that one. Savage is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time and I’m happy at the prospect of having a collection of different toys from Savage’s many eras.
