The queen is dead; long live Mattel’s Legend, ‘Macho King’ Randy Savage at San Diego Comic-Con
Randy Savage was one of few wrestlers who got away with dismissing Jerry “the King” Lawler as the “Queen” of wrestling on the air in Memphis. (I believe only legit tough guys like Joe LeDuc and Savage used that insult in promos, though you’d think it was an obvious putdown.)
It started with Savage’s shoot promos in ICW, so it was only natural that he’d continue to emasculate Lawler when he reached an agreement to work with promoter Jerry Jarrett. As funny it as it may sound, Lawler was awfully touchy about the “Queen” comments and, later, comments about his age, which I learned the hard way after this promo. (My goodness, the Dream Machine was one hell of a interview.)
After Harley Race initially stole Lawler’s royal status in the WWF, the King title eventually drifted to Savage, who had to relish using the gimmick of his former legit rival on the national stage. Although much has not been revealed by Mattel as far as the Legends line is concerned, pics of the forthcoming “Macho King” figure were revealed last night in San Diego as part of Comic-Con.
